Divided into three parts, the first part of this study examines the role of sport in the Roman world and the historical evidence for its importance. The second section considers the attitude of writers such as Vergil, Horace, Ovid and Propertius towards sport, and the final section gathers a list of relevant texts and provides each with a translation and commentary.
